Somebody once said that Karate has mulitiple levels on which to learn.  One can quickly guess the first level is kick and punch.  Most people can teach simple kicks and punches and everyone can learn how to execute those techniques.  In order to progress, one has to implement discipline and consistency in their training methods.  At a higher level, one must understand the history behind the creation of the arts as well as the advanced understanding of the execution of the techniques.  Historically the advanced understanding of the techniques were only taught to the most trusted students who had proven their dedication to the art and of honorable character.  Some things should not change.
But in order to ascertain a higher level of understanding of karate, one has to have fostered a deep resounding level of respect for their lives and the lives of the people around them.  The path is right there in front on you, but you need to venture out on that path.
